Marines of the 4th and 5th divisions stepped
on the beaches of Iwo, finally meeting little
enemy resistance.Coarse volcanic sand
hampered the movement up beach of the
men and the machines. As naval gunfire
subsided, it allowed the Japanese to fire
heavily on the invading forces. The 4th
division pushed strong to try and capture the
quarry, a Japanese strong point.The 5th
division had the mission of isolating Mount
Suribachi. Both missions were accomplished
that day.
